Meet the Team
To achieve its ambitions, the project is drawing on the expertise of a team of seven researchers. The project is led by the Principle Investigator Sarah Semple with her Co-Investigator Rebecca Gowland. Together Sarah and Rebecca will work with Durham colleagues Janet Montgomery and Andrew Millard. Sarah and Rebecca bring combined expertise on burial, pathology, identity and landscape, while Janet will share her specialist knowledge of isotopic analyses, diet, diasporas and the project will benefit from Andrew’s expertise in Bayesian statistics and chronology. The team also includes three post-doctoral research assistants. Sue Harrington, who brought Beyond the Tribal Hidage to conclusion and publication, joins the team from UCL. She brings expert knowledge and legacy data from the preceding project as well as a long established track record in artefact research. Her published doctoral research is centred on textile remains from early medieval contexts. Brian Buchanan recently completed his doctorate at Durham University on the built environment in the North East of England across the Roman to early medieval transition. His specialist areas of expertise include applied GIS and statistics with particular reference to the early medieval landscape. A third researcher will join the project in September 2016 to carry forward the osteological, palaeopathological and isotopic analyses on selected cemeteries in years two and three.
